Introduction

Lean thinking is about increasing the velocity of any process by doing only what adds value to the customer and eliminating everything else.

A lean production is a management approach that focuses on reducing waste while maintaining quality. This method can be used in all aspects of a business, from design to production and distribution. Lean production aims to reduce costs by increasing business efficiency and responsiveness to market demands.

Lean production has its roots in manufacturing, but it can be applied much more broadly. Lean is simple to explain but difficult to implement. Only about 5% to 7% of organisations that try to implement Lean are successful. The reason for this is that most businesses regard Lean as an operational rather than a strategic process. They devote only a portion of their attention to the transformation or delegate it to someone incapable of making any progress. And the effort fades away.

The goal of this unit is to teach students how to implement and evaluate a service delivery improvement project using lean manufacturing and improvement methodologies.

Learning outcomes

The learner will:

• Be able to undertake a service delivery improvement project using lean production and improvement methodologies

The first step in this task is to create a correct and appropriate plan for improving a workplace project using lean manufacturing and improvement methodologies. You must then use the plan to implement an appropriate improvement to service delivery, ensuring that efficient and effective controls and monitoring techniques have been or are being used to ensure the project’s ongoing implementation.

• Be able to develop a report on the outcomes of the service improvement project

The second part of the task requires you to assess the success of the improvement project and provide a conclusion or recommendations on how it can be controlled to produce long-term sustainability of the improvement. You must then create an accurate and appropriate report on the improvement project that communicates the project’s outcomes.

Assessment criteria

The learner can:

• Create a plan to improve a workplace project using lean production and improvement methodologies; and
• Put the plan into action to improve service delivery.
• Employ appropriate controls and monitoring techniques to ensure the project’s ongoing implementation.
• Assess the success of the improvement project, describing how it is managed to ensure the long-term sustainability of the improvement.
• Create a report on the improvement project that communicates the project’s outcomes.
